James Bridle - 'New Ways of Seeing
The machines that we create inherit our biases too.

Last week I was looking into algorithmic biases and where they come from, being sure it is our own broken society. After all, what you put into algorithm, you also get out. But what, how and who decides what is good and what is bad? Where does the decision making come from? 'Algorithms in a sense are the 'nervous system' of the AI. They are models that underpin machine learning, prediction and problem solving. Yet, as many researchers agree, due to their design by humans, algorithms can never be neutral.' Somebody has to 'teach' a machine what is right, and what is wrong, in which contexts. Logically thinking, the optimal /right/ and /wrong/ comes from our social norms which have been developed throughout centuries.
'We should not be relying on technology, we should be relying on our common sense and our gut feeling. Any system we encounter, it is important to keep in mind that [it] probably has the very same failures and defects built in as our society has.' - I quote to confirm and blame the society. And we do live in a healing and learning society, that has seen and done and still is doing and seeing so much cruelty. After all, such things as racism, gender inequality, digital colonialism, sexism etc. still play along important influences in nowadays world. Just sometimes hidden behind algorithms and machines, given full accountability.
This of course makes us wonder, how do we change that? How do we make the world a better place?
Algorithmic biases are just a mirror to our society - Machines we create inherit our biases too. This way keeping those biases alive and running through generations; creating a spiral. Now the defects and failures that we have in our society come from history, traditions, culture, arts, built through years and years of adapting, working towards power.

-Are individualised algorithms, cookies and our profiles based on them are silently erasing the concept of equality?
Due to information collected about us as individuals we are getting certain information thrown back at us specifically designed for us. While it seems all convenient, it also means that it is biased.

-Technology was created by humans and therefore manipulated by humans, however now it is backfiring and manipulating us in certain ways, a lot of times creating chaos. How unethical would it be to use technology and algorithms to manipulate the society for a better cause - introducing more equality and acceptance. But then again, how far would it go and could that just become another tool that totalitarian regimes use?
